Poems

Always with us, joined hand in hand,Walks even now an angel band.

"A CUP OF COLD WATER"

Come , brother, thirsting in a barren land,Drink from this flowing stream where now I drink;Turn not in sorrow, faint not, give thy hand,Pause not from pride upon the very brink;Drink, brother, drink, and on thy knees with joy,Pray ne'er again that earthly thirst annoy.

LOVE'S FLOCK

Shepherd our thoughts, O loving One!That they may follow Thee—A white flock, treading in the stepsOf Christ's own purity.

LOVE'S SUNSHINE

The tender flower throughout the hours of dayUplifts its face before the sun's warm lightWith grateful joy; but with the fall of nightIts petals close till comes the dawn's glad ray.

TRUE CHRISTIANS

The workers in His vineyard—blessed band!Their lamps are ever trimmed, and brightly glow,Shedding the light of Truth o'er every land;Illuming all the paths where mortals go.

THE PUBLICAN

Is there some one who comes to you todayWhom you have thought unworthy and untrue—Some one the world has judged a castaway?

COMFORT

O FLEDGLING, on a cold world thrust,Fly thou to God, since fly thou must! For He shall cover thee with His wings,And 'neath His feathers thou shalt trust.

HEAVEN

'Tis not afar in distant skiesThe shining hills of heaven rise.

TWO ROSES

A rosebud fair in a garden grew,Tiny and pale and shy.

LOVE KNOWS THE TRUTH

Love knows the truth! No sudden shaft of light,Cleaving the darkness of a sleeping world,Speeds with a swifter, surer, gladder flightTo wake the sweetness in soft petals furledThan wings Love's thought of truth.

UNITY

It is not just because our eyes are meetingIn daily converse, that we claim a friend; It is not e'en because our hearts are beatingSo near each other that our pulses blend.
