JSH-Online goes mobile

Christ Jesus says that we “must be born again” (John 3:7). Each moment we have the opportunity to become new, rejuvenated, and refreshed. Mary Baker Eddy writes: “The new birth is not the work of a moment. It begins with moments, and goes on with years; moments of surrender to God, of childlike trust and joyful adoption of good; moments of self-abnegation, self-consecration, heaven-born hope, and spiritual love” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 15).

Today, new updates to JSH-Online provide a rejuvenated and refreshed experience for all users. Holding to the desire to remain “abreast of the times” (Church Manual, p. 44), these new enhancements are in response to your feedback. With 50 percent of JSH-Online site visits from smartphones and tablets, a significant focus of the update has been on streamlining presentation and navigation on mobile devices. Additionally, you will find Concord Express enhancements and the ability to download the audio for an entire issue with one click.

Getting to know the new mobile layout—smartphones and tablets

Smartphone View

Although navigation remains the same when browsing on a desktop, you will see a significant change when viewing the site on a smartphone or tablet. The new mobile layout puts the search bar in an easy-to-find location, just below the JSH-Online header on every page. To either side of the search bar, you’ll find the Menu and More tabs, designed for easy site navigation. These tabs are anchored at the top of your screen so you can find them easily wherever you are on a page.

Using the Menu and More tabs

The Menu tab gives you access to core site navigation for JSH-Online, as well as other related Christian Science websites. The list will change depending on whether you are on the homepage or within a specific magazine (just as the menu bar changes when you’re on a desktop).

The More tab gives you access to key resources and important information that you would typically find on the right-hand side of the desktop view. These sidebar items may be different on each page, so be sure to look here for helpful information. To exit either of these tabs, just press the close button or tap outside the black box.

No more endless scrolling

On a mobile device, start scrolling up and an arrow will appear that takes you directly to the top of the page.

“Add to homescreen”

Unique homescreen icons are now available on your smartphone or tablet for Concord Express, eBibleLesson Express, The Christian Science Journal Directory, JSH Web-Radio, and the homepage of JSH-Online. To add an icon to your device, visit the landing page of one of these resources from your device, tap your mobile browser’s share icon (Apple iOS) or menu button (Android OS), and then select “Add to homescreen.”

Issue audio download

You can now download the audio for an entire Journal or Sentinel issue from the Table of Contents page in one zip file that contains multiple MP3 files. Unzip the file and add the MP3 files to your media player on your computer to sync with your mobile device. Download a full issue or Read the FAQ

Concord Express enhancements

The new Concord Express more closely emulates the full version of Concord with a two-panel display. On the right, the search results are listed by book, in page order. On the left, the book view provides a continuous read of entire chapters or books. Use the “Next” and “Previous” links at the bottom to navigate to the next chapter or book.
