In a recent issue of the Times-Union there appeared an article entitled, "A Woman's Immense Achievement." The writer's real motive for writing the article seems to have been to disparage and discredit Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. It is surprising that at this day and time a person endeavoring to enlighten the public should attempt to give as facts, statements which were proved false more than a quarter of a century ago. The public to-day is too well acquainted with Christian Science and the life and works of its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, to be misled by such an article. Christian Science is not a hidden mystery; its textbook is to be found in public libraries throughout the world. There is scarcely a community in which the English language is spoken where something is not known of its healing and saving ministry.

In the year 1866, while reading the Bible, Mrs. Eddy was instantly healed of severe injuries, the result of a fall. In speaking of this healing she says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 108), "When apparently near the confines of mortal existence, standing already within the shadow of the deathvalley, I learned these truths in divine Science: that all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever-present." This experience was the dawn to her consciousness of the Christ-healing as taught and practiced by the Master.

Christian Science is not based upon the theories of Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, the magnetic healer, as was asserted in the article referred to. In fact Mrs. Eddy has written two chapters in the Christian Science textbook denouncing hypnotism, mesmerism, animal magnetism, and spiritualism. The writer of the article states that other religious organizations, realizing the need of a healing ministry, are establishing clinics based on principles somewhat similar to Christian Science. Such religious organizations, including "new thought," have absolutely nothing in common with the teachings and Principle of Christian Science. It is true the world was never in greater need of healing than to-day, and Christian Science is meeting this need by freeing mankind of all manner of sickness and sin. It is proving to us that the promises of the Bible are for today, as well as for yesterday and to-morrow.
