Why are ye subject to ordinances?

Originally published in the June 15, 1890 issue of the Christian Science Series (Vol. 2, No. 4)

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances ? — Col. ii. 20.

These are the words of Paul to the Colossians, in the early Christian era. That colossal character, inspired by Truth, saw the vanity of adhering to ordinances which represent but the symbols or types of Christianity. To this fact he calls the attention of his flock; telling them that as long as they adhere to ordinances, "Christ the hope of glory" has not risen in them, and that there can be no progress in such a line of conduct.
