The witness

Originally published in the August 15, 1890 issue of the Christian Science Series (Vol. 2, No. 8)

It was just a swift, sweet thought of Love Divine,
That met me there alone at eventide;
And lo! a hallowed light filled every thought of mine,
And 'twere as if an angel spoke, close at my side:
"Why dost thou doubt about the Father's will?
His way is perfect goodness—‘Peace, be still.'"

Around me fell a chord of Harmony
Wherein was Purity and Love complete.
I listened—yes, "the Truth shall make you free.”
How tender was the accent, and how sweet!
And Hope arose to meet the heavenly call:
"Look unto me, fear not, for I am all."

And now I know that thou doth surely dwell
Within the thought that lives and rests in thee;
And, knowing this, I know that all is well,
For thou, O God, art Love and Harmony.
Keep Thou and guide me in the Truth, the Way
That leadeth unto thee and perfect day.
