Pregnancy and good expectations
When my husband and I learned we were expecting our first baby, our excitement was beyond words. Nothing compared to the exhilaration of looking forward to something so good, so progressive, so adventurous as expanding our family.
Brought up with the teachings of Christian Science, I had a clear understanding that God is divine Love and in control of everything in His creation. I also knew that God is the spiritual Parent of us all. Although my husband didn’t study Christian Science, he was receptive to the ideas shared and the healings he’d witnessed and heard about from my family and me. We both decided we wanted our children born at home.
We were uplifted by a statement the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, made about scientific obstetrics: “To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, you should so detach mortal thought from its material conceptions, that the birth will be natural and safe. Though gathering new energy, this idea cannot injure its useful surroundings in the travail of spiritual birth. A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 463).
