In an age of increasing dialogue between various faiths and disciplines, Christian Scientists have found that fruitful discussion often requires the preliminary clearing away of a tangled underbrush of misconceptions. Certainly this has proved to be the case in regard to the teachings, practice, and polity of the Church of Christ, Scientist, founded by Mary Baker Eddy almost a century ago.
In 1898 Mrs. Eddy gave the Committee on Publication of her Church the duty of correcting “in a Christian manner” public misconceptions of Christian Science and Christian Scientists. Church Manual, p. 97 The following selection of letters from the past two decades illustrates the spirit and rationale of this activity. It also illustrates some of the common misunderstandings of Christian Science that would try to stand in the way of full Christian dialogue.
