Careers in Christian Science Nursing

Originally published in the 1973 pamphlet titled “Christian Science Nursing”

Christian Science nurses are employed in a variety of institutions operated by and for Christian Scientists. These include sanatoriums, nursing homes, rest homes and homes offering special attention, schools and camps. Some nurses feel attracted to specializing in working with those whom the world terms mentally ill, mentally retarded, or emotionally disturbed. Others find their right place in private duty nursing, including obstetrical nursing, or a visiting nurse service, which calls for the greatest versatility.

The first Christian Science nurses were medically-trained individuals who had become interested in Christian Science and were willing to devote themselves exclusively to the care of students of this Science. Some of these dedicated women became the first staff nurses and subsequently the first instructors in early nurses training programs offered at the Christian Science Benevolent Association, Chestnut Hill, Mass.
