Calm in the Pacific

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

As threats of tsunamis sweep around the countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean, calm, obedient attention must be given to authorities who advise safety and escape from harm.

At the same time, we must also give focused attention to the safety that comes from an understanding of God—divine Mind, Love, Principle—the power that “has gathered the wind in his fists” (Prov. 30:4).

Waves of terror frequently seem to surge through public consciousness and through world events as reported by the daily news. So it is becoming increasingly important to start each day with prayers for guidance, intelligence, and wisdom—as well as compassion and love—to promote safety.

I’m spending more time each morning in thoughtful consideration of the order and laws of God that govern me and all mankind, before the events of the day crash in on me.

“Peace, be still” was Jesus’ admonition when he calmed the waves that threatened to swamp him and his disciples as they traversed the Sea of Galilee in a small fishing boat. His calm spiritual understanding overcame the tempest surrounding the boat. And his words are as meaningful today as they ever were, when we turn to and rely on the same omnipotent power he did—on a God who loves His children, and causes them to be held safe from harm.

We can rely on this divine protection when we remain calm in the face of adversity, and move in accord with divine wisdom, thereby saving ourselves and others.

Declaring the immediate presence of God’s all-mighty Love—His all-encompassing Mind—leads us out of danger, and evacuates us to a space where our thoughts and bodies are safe. As Jesus taught: “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).
