Air France Flight 447—Love never loses contact

An Air France plane, en route from Brazil to France, feared to have crashed into the Atlantic with 228 people aboard, has left friends, relatives, and the public shocked and grief-stricken. While any loss of a loved one is deeply distressing, the sense of not knowing what has happened adds an extra element of disturbance to a tragedy.

Not being certain of what has occurred leaves room open for hope that things might not be as tragic as they seem. Could a miracle happen? Could survivors be found? That would be a profound joy. On the other hand, not knowing invites the imagination to conjure up pictures that one would rather not contemplate.

Today, citizens across continents can hear the promise of every loved one’s unending connectedness to true life, divine Life, God, ponder it, and reach for the conviction—the feeling—of divine Love’s all-comforting power. Is feeling the Love that is Life really possible? The Psalmist thought it was. He wrote, in prayer to God, “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
