I may not tread the paths he trodIn famed Judea's land,But I can walk as near to GodAs those who touched his hand;I may not climb the vine-clad hills,Nor stand on Olives' height,But when his truth my vision fills,I see a grander sight!

I used to knock with face half turned awayFrom there where I would entrance find; had eyesAlone for all the world did think and say;Knocked feebly at the door; expressed surpriseIt ope'd not to my call,—that call so faint and lowI scarce heard it myself,—the world engrossed me so.

FROM DAY TO DAY

Father , give me an understanding heart,That I may learn to know myself, and seeWhere I should spurn the wrong and choose the better part,And thus from sinful bondage be set free.

GOD-MEASURED

Another year time's loos'ning grasp hath laidUpon the altar of eternity.

FORGIVENESS

"How oft shall I forgive?

SENSE-DREAMS

I dreamt the sea was rough and high,And rude and wild the wind.

THE NEW YEAR

The year is new to those who dwell in time,Who reckon age by days and months and years,Who look through windows dimmed by winter's rimeFor twelve months more of hopes and doubts and fears!

TRUTH'S GLORIOUS STAR

Bright star of Truth, which pierced Judea's nightAnd over Bethlehem shed thy silvery lightUpon the manger where the Christ-child lay,Today we see thy beauteous rays again,And hear hosannas and the glad amen,And view the light which heralded that day.

GOD DIRECTS

Whether the flower grow fast or slow,Whether the rain be fallingOr on its petals the sunbeams glowWhen the south wind is calling;Whether the dew bathe its tender face,Or a chill breeze be blowing,Through a divine, eternal graceGod hath directed its growing.

INWARD JOURNEYING

Begone , ye tinseled treasuresThat fade in morning's light!Pass on, ye paltry pleasuresOf days that die at night.
