The principal accusation which our critic brings against Christian Science is that it teaches the unreality of matter.

As I progress in the study of Christian Science, I find that many passages of Scripture have been illumined for me.

How grand in its utter simplicity is the Gospel narrative of the birth of Jesus! Can any description, in its entire absence of pomp of words, compare with it, and yet nothing is lacking necessary to convey the whole scene to the mind of the most unimaginative.

With regard to the lecturer's explanation that the rapid spread of the movement was due to the promise it held out of "relief from bodily pain and sickness," let me say that an important feature, indeed the basis of the teachings of Christian Science, is the understanding that the patient treated in Christian Science must be morally regenerated as well as healed physically.
Christian Scientists do not say that there is no pain; in fact, we admit that to the man who is suffering pain it is extremely real; but, unlike our critic, we are unwilling to attribute that pain to God or to hold Him responsible for the sins of the world which are daily committed, and we do say that when man reaches the correct understanding of God and when he reaches out to Him and trusts in Him for the alleviation of pain, that he does obtain the relief from pain and rises to the consciousness of its absence, and therefore its nothingness.
In the critic's opinion much that Christian Science claims at the present time is beyond the bounds of reason.
