Christ-inspired love dissolves rivalry
When someone is a target of jealousy and persecution, their expected reaction might be indignation. But when I had an experience with a colleague who apparently considered me a rival, I turned instead to what Christ Jesus says.
In his Sermon on the Mount, the Master commends the opposite response: “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5:11, 12).
My colleague and I were working for an organization that encouraged innovation. As a senior member of the staff with experience in many areas, I headed a small team that looked for ways to use people and resources more efficiently. Management showed particular interest in my team’s proposal to work with a department headed by this colleague, whom I’ll call Bill.
