It’s all about politics, … or is it?

Political tweet storms, debates (both on TV and in local coffee shops), in-your-face headlines, and contentious social media posts can sometimes rivet our attention on political problems rather than solutions. And yet, to bring healing and renewal to what can seem to be intractable situations, the mental waters need to be calmed. Most of all, we need to remember we are not God!

The common worldview of government starts with a bunch of minds. Some of these minds are liberal, some conservative, some independent, and, yes, some are even apathetic. Then, valiant human effort is usually made on the side of making decisions that unite many of these minds into a cause—with which some agree and some disagree.

The problem with this standpoint is that it is based on the belief that man has a mind separate from his Maker, divine Mind. This view starts with the human as the architect of salvation, and would subvert the First Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). But Christian Science teaches a different standpoint: that we are made in God’s image and likeness, as stated in the Bible (see Genesis 1:26, 27), and that as spiritual expressions of the one divine Mind, we aren’t personal creators or “fixers.” Instead, we find solutions when we humbly listen for God’s infinite wisdom and then follow through.
