A healing lesson in Mother-love
One night about a year ago I was unable to sleep because there was a lot of pain in my stomach. My first reaction was to pray. I listened to that week’s Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly a couple of times and prayed with some of the ideas I found there. I also read some articles from JSH-Online.com that I have found helpful in the past, and read from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Despite this, the pain didn’t go away, and I was finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate on reading or praying.
At about 3:00 in the morning these words from Science and Health came to me: “If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them” (p. 420). I was living at home with my mum, who was a Christian Science practitioner. I didn’t particularly want to wake her up so early in the morning, but because of the discomfort I was in, I felt I had little choice. I was disappointed that I hadn’t been able to find healing myself, but as this quote had come to my thought, I realized that maybe what I needed was some humility.
When I went into my mum’s room, she woke up; I told her that I was in a lot of pain and asked if she could pray for me. Within seconds of my voicing my concern and question, the pain completely disappeared. It actually took me a minute or two to say anything further because I was so surprised! The difficulty had seemed so overwhelming one minute, and was completely gone the next. I told my mum I was healed, and we were both very grateful to God.
