Not pulled down … but lifted up!
We hear many common phrases with the word down in it. There is the acceptance that going “downhill” is inevitable as years go by; many anxiously watch the economy and fear the markets will go down; and the complex challenges facing the world leave many feeling very emotionally down. With all of these supposed downward pulls, feelings of depression and helplessness are faced by many.
The recent passing of our precious family cat of twenty years had me feeling very down. I felt a deep desire to feel God’s love and the assurance that all of God’s creation expresses eternal Life, which is God.
As I struggled with feeling down, I knew this was not a God-inspired state of thought. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, describes the pull away from knowing and feeling the joy of God’s goodness, as “animal magnetism.” It is the supposed action of mortal mind, the mistaken belief of life as material, distracting thought away from recognizing the spiritual and uplifting reality of divine Life. I have witnessed many healings through the removal of misconceptions about life and the acceptance of spiritual facts, so I knew I didn’t have to feel gloomy and down.
