Stepping out of darkness
Six years ago I heard El Heraldo de la Ciencia Cristiana radio program on a station in Tijuana (at the border of Mexico and the United States). In those days, I did not really understand the Bible, even though I had been attending a Christian church for a couple years. One time, the pastor read this verse from the Bible: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). I decided to ask God to show me the truth. I had been raised to believe in the fears and superstitions of spiritualism, and I wanted to be free from them, as well as from the belief I had been taught that there is no good, only evil.
From then on, every Sunday I would listen to the Heraldo program. To hear that God is Love brought tremendous relief, and listening to the program felt like stepping out of darkness. The testimonies of healing through Christian Science and the simple and powerful truths that God is good and I am His likeness made me feel that healing and blessings were possible for me, as well.
I wanted to know more about this loving and all-powerful God, so I got the address of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, near me and went to the Spanish-language service. There, I was introduced to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. On the page before the Table of Contents, I saw that same quotation from John. I thought, “This is the book, this is the church that is going to make me free!” There was a sign that said, “God is Love,” on the wall at the church, and that caught my attention. To me, that signified freedom, too, because my previous religious training had taught me that “everybody hates you, so you must hate everyone.” Discovering the truth about God, that He is Love, really made a tremendous impact on my thinking, which was replete with false beliefs about God.
