Watching out for good

Shelly
Philip Richardson
A fighter jet crashes into an apartment complex and there are no fatalities. One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hits Indonesia with little damage and no tsunami. Peruvian miners are safely rescued after almost a week underground. A toddler falls from a third-story window and is unharmed. Tornadoes rip through Texas with no reported fatalities. These are all signs of good.

As the Mayan calendar comes to a close in December, some believe we should be watching for signs of the end of the world. Many, however, dispute the doomsday forecasts, and I join with them by asking God: “Father, what do You want me to watch for?”

Perhaps positive outcomes like the ones listed above point, however indirectly, toward the answer. They show that even in the midst of what are usually thought of as catastrophic events, it is possible to see evidence of good.
