Jaw pain quickly healed

My late afternoon dental appointment was the last task at the close of a pressure-cooker business day, and I approached it with a “this will be a slam-dunk” attitude.

Before crowning a tooth, the dentist kindly offered to numb the area with Novocain, but I declined, expecting this to be an easy final procedure. However, instead of a quick fitting, he made many attempts to get it right—each one making me brace for the next discomfort. By the time I left the office, the entire side of my head was pounding with pain.

As I walked to my car, my plan was to drive home as quickly as possible and call a Christian Science practitioner for Christian Science treatment (this was in the days before cellphone texting). While approaching a main artery of the city, however, my plan was foiled as I joined masses of others jamming home in rush-hour traffic. It would take at least an hour, and possibly more, to travel across the city to my home.
