My late afternoon dental appointment was the last task at the close of a pressure-cooker business day, and I approached it with a “this will be a slam-dunk” attitude. Before crowning a tooth, the dentist kindly offered to numb the area with Novocain, but I declined, expecting this to be an easy final procedure.
