The Comforter IN ACTION

God's loving law, divine Science, heals and saves.

I had struggled all morning with an earache. By late afternoon, I wasn't able to do anything but curl up in bed. My roommate's brother, John, was a Christian Science practitioner, and I asked that he be called to pray for me. He actually came to our house, pulled up a chair beside my bed, sat there, and prayed. He didn't say much. He just prayed. Honestly, I don't know how long he was there. All I do know is that I fell asleep—an event that would have seemed impossible a short while before. When I woke up, the pain was completely gone. I was entirely comfortable. I've never had an earache again.

Later, when I asked John how I was healed, he told me, "That was the Comforter in action." As a new student of Christian Science, I didn't have a clue as to what he meant, but his answer did spark my interest. Through the years since, I have enjoyed getting a clearer understanding of what the Comforter is all about, and I have felt its tender effect in my life many times.

A few years later, I was living in an apartment by myself in Boston. I was generally happy with my friends, my work, and my life. But from time to time, I would be overwhelmed with loneliness. If you have ever been lonely or depressed, you may know the feeling.
