A reason to hope

One of my favorite lines in the Bible is in Isaiah, where God says, "I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine" (43:1). There have been a lot of times when those words have been very comforting to me. And as I've built on them in studying to understand more of my relationship with God, I've found that there's no reason ever to feel hopeless, to feel separate and cut off. Not even in the middle of nowhere.

When I got out of college, I headed off toward Alaska to seek fame and fortune. But I realized that I didn't really have a good game plan. I had to hitchhike the last part of my journey because of car trouble. I felt absolutely cut off from any help and wondered what in the world I was doing out in the middle of the Canadian north woods on the Alcan Highway, halfway to Alaska. I felt totally alone.

Then I began thinking of what I'd learned about the nature of God. In studying Christian Science, along with the Bible, I read Mary Baker Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, on a daily basis. To me, it's a book that's all about how to "think out" from the nature of God in order to find ourselves. I realized I didn't have everything it took to find my answers on my own.
