Prayer enlarges our vision

Originally Published in Le Heraut de la Christian Science

About two years ago I developed an eye infection, and my eye became swollen and very painful. I began to pray to solve this problem. Then I also asked for the prayer of a Christian Science practitioner.

I thought of a Bible passage that says, "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law" (Ps. 119:18). To my great joy, the signs of infection disappeared quickly. But then it reappeared, just as virulently, a few days later, and at first I was very discouraged. But then the thought came to me to go back to the Bible verse quoted above, and this time I tried to really understand its deeper meaning.

I noticed I had been much more preoccupied with the first words of this quote—"Open thou mine eyes"—than with the need to "behold wondrous things out of thy law" (the law of God). From that moment on, I began to question what I was "beholding" in my daily life. Did I see around me what God had really created—goodness and perfection? Or did I find much to criticize and complain about? I told myself that it was my vision of things that needed to change.
