The last pair of roller skates
Our family has a collection of inspiring Christmas stories that we bring out each year, right after Thanksgiving. We read one or two a day in preparation for the holidays.
My favorite story tells of two small boys, poorly dressed, who stood waiting outside a general store in the freezing cold for two hours one Christmas morning in the 1940s. The owners never opened the store on Christmas Day, but that year the wife suddenly felt an impulsion to go back to the store.
How surprised she was to find the two boys standing at the door, the younger one crying. The older boy explained that his little brother had not gotten anything for Christmas, but he had three dollars to buy a pair of skates.
