The comforting message of Christmas

Where does this Christmas find you? Riding high? Just managing to keep your head above water? Some might say the world is in a particularly precarious place in these closing days of 2002. But then again, previous generations have most surely felt the same way.

Many of this week's articles and features relate past experiences in which authors have found the hope, comfort, healing, of Christmas. And it's interesting that, while some quickly grasped that in small or large ways the light of the season had touched their lives, others—still maybe thinking of their troubles—only recognized later on the full value of what took place.

That's sort of how it has been all along with Christmas. When a prophet foretold the coming of "God with us" with the assurance "Comfort ye my people," the message was slow to resonate. When the Christ child came to earth some 2,000 years ago, the event went largely unrecognized. Today the healing power of the Christ is still slow in finding acceptance, even as it shows itself among us.
