I was born and brought up in a rural village in western Kenya, the third child born after two girls. My parents and my grandparents were so delighted to have their first son and grandson.
The joy about my coming into being was short-lived, however, as it was discovered that I had a "strange condition," that of difficult breathing accompanied by constant flu, particularly at night.
My community happens to be one in which the belief in voodoo was and is still prevalent, and my illness was attributed to witchcraft. The traditional curative method never helped me. My parents later opted to consult a physician, who diagnosed my case as chronic asthma. The medical examination revealed that my chest was pretty weak, and I was immediately put on medication. The physician said my ailment was a hereditary one that would not be cured by any known medicine, and that the antihistamines prescribed would barely lessen an attack. I was therefore advised to learn to live with the disease.
