While acting in a musical production, in which I also had to play the piano, I rather forcefully slammed my hand into a misplaced chair on my first entrance. I realized as I sat down at the keyboard that something "serious" had happened—possibly a sprain or a broken bone.

Since there was no point when I could be offstage to pray, I had to pray right then and there, while I was performing. What a great opportunity! The first thoughts that I had, however, were ones of anger toward the stage manager, who had misplaced the chair, and I had to reject these thoughts as not having power. In God's government of the universe there is nothing out of place, and no evil or lazy mentality that can harm man. Nor can one of God's children be a "tool" to harm another. A feeling of love came over me toward this stage manager.

I then had to pray specifically about the pain I was having in playing the piano. In Christian Science I had learned that the body is the objectification of thought. Understanding that man is the reflection of infinite Spirit, I could see that the body could not have a mind of its own, but was obedient to one Mind only—God. Because I was a reflection of God, created in His likeness, I could not evidence a break or sprain in my hand, because such a state is in fact completely ungodlike. I could only express God's qualities, like joy and goodness. This problem I faced was actually nothing more than a mental imposition of evil, posing as a physical injury.
