Approximately twenty years ago I began the study of Christian Science. My interest in this study came at a time when my life was in desperate need of change. My husband Ken and I had four small children who were a joy to us, but because of his involvement with drug use, our life was very unstable. His addiction to heroin had lasted for about twelve years and had resulted in regular periods of incarceration.

Despite his drug dependency, I cared for my husband deeply and wanted our marriage to hold together, not only for myself but for our children as well. Somehow I had always felt that the addiction was not really a part of him because he was a very kind and good person. Yet I simply didn't know what to do about it, and as time went on it seemed our marriage would not survive.

One day I went to visit my husband at a local jail for what I thought might be the last time (I had decided to leave him). As we talked over a telephone and looked at each other through a small visitor's window, he told me that he had learned of Christian Science and was going to be a Christian Scientist. "What's Christian Science?" I asked. As he tried to explain, I remember thinking that whatever would be good for him would definitely be all right with me.
