When I take a retrospective look at my life, I rejoice in the great changes that have taken place since I came into Christian Science six years ago. With such rejoicing I also feel much gratitude to the divine creator for His infinite mercy and for guiding me to this teaching. The following promise by Christ Jesus has been proved in my life: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John).

I was raised in a country where I witnessed injustice, oppression, and inequality. As a child growing up in a very poor family, I remember asking my father why we could not have a freer life. He stated that only through severe human suffering was one, upon death, guaranteed immediate entrance into heaven.

Searching for a better answer, I entered my adult life with a great intellectual and spiritual curiosity. My extensive reading included several philosophical and religious writings. "Who or what is God? What is man? What is the truth?" These were questions I repeatedly asked myself. I felt there should exist a higher ideal than a contradictory deity who fell far short of giving deep meaning and purpose to life. Disappointed in my search, I became an atheist by default. I felt that as an atheist I would come closest to being a free thinker.
