Steering clear of the treacherous waters of adultery

After having been warned that the undertow at a beautiful beach was the most dangerous in the world, I was shocked at how strong the temptation was to discard intelligent restraint and plunge into the water—warning or no warning! An adulterous relationship can be as alluring to one as that surf was to me.

A first step in resisting adultery is the desire to act intelligently rather than emotionally. This includes a willingness to see the dangers involved. Even if a great many people refuse to recognize the hazards of adultery, one who is honest can more readily do so.

But one's basic reason for resisting sex outside marriage should be the desire to obey God's commandment given to us by Moses, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," Ex. 20:14. and to gain the spiritual perception promised by Christ Jesus, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Matt. 5:8. Since purity is necessary in order to understand God and such understanding is the essence of life, See John 17:3 . chastity is worth a battle.
