Recently, two very close friends passed away within a short time of each other. Adjustment was a struggle; the loss of happy, stimulating companionship was upsetting. With renewed dedication I studied the Bible, the writings of Mrs. Eddy, and read several biographies of her. This activity finally brought me to the point of accepting that God alone is really the source of love. The biographies in particular inspired my gratitude for the simplicity, warmth, and magnitude of Mrs. Eddy's expression of the Love that is God, and for her emphasis on this expression both in her writings and in her daily life.

From the book We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, containing reminiscences by persons closely associated with her, these words of hers stood out (p. 68): "I saw the love of God encircling the universe and man, filling all space, and that divine Love so permeated my own consciousness that I loved with Christlike compassion everything I saw." The author of this particular reminiscence added (p. 69), "The way Mrs. Eddy said the word 'Love' made me feel that she must have loved even a blade of grass under her feet."

Thus I began to learn that we do not love God—or man—of our own volition. "We love him [God], because he first loved us," writes John (I John 4:19). We do not initiate or originate the loving—God does. Mind, a synonym for God, is the actual source of all intelligence. Just so, Love—also a synonym for God—needs to be seen as the source of all real love.
