Christian Science has been my only physician

Christian Science has been my only physician. I grew up in a joyous household, being nourished by the truths contained in the Christian Science periodicals. The Christian Science Sunday School gave me the foundation of my faith in God. I have had instantaneous healings of sorrow and pain just by reading testimonies given in the periodicals.

Last summer while on a fishing trip, I was thrown forcefully from a bucking horse. As I lay on the ground, I turned to God in prayer, acknowledging His allness. I got up and tried to walk, but could not put my weight on my right leg. Because I felt weak and faint, I lay down again. This statement from our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, came to my thought: "Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (p. 393).

The other riders urged me to stay on the ground, as they said my hip or leg must be broken. The ranch owner came with his pickup truck to take me back to the cabin. He insisted that I should be taken to the nearest doctor in a city forty miles away, to see what bones were broken. I assured him that as a student of Christian Science I did not need a doctor's examination. I told him that he need assume no responsibility for the accident. As I explained to him how Christian Scientists turn to God in every need, he remarked, "I wish I had your courage and conviction."
