Early during my service with the Armed Forces in a foreign...

Early during my service with the Armed Forces in a foreign country, I received a package from home that contained a pocket-size Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At the time, I passed it off as being of no real value. I did some reading in it occasionally, but I did not realize the protection it gave me. No harm came to me during my term of service, and I felt that I was just plain lucky.

Upon returning home I became aware of a tremendous change in my mother, who had become very much interested in Christian Science. Even this did not convince me of the worth of Christian Science until several years later an attack of appendicitis presented itself. After an examination by a physician I was told that an immediate operation was necessary. This frightened me, and I turned to Christian Science. A practitioner was called to give me treatment, and immediately the fear was destroyed and the healing came. The operation never took place.

Again Christian Science had prevailed, but I failed to follow through. I did do some reading out of a sense of gratitude, but frankly I was just a leaner. This went on until a heart condition became apparent, and again great fear possessed me. Questioning me, my wife recognized and rebuked the error of my submitting to this malady. Through her help and with treatment from a practitioner, the heart condition was overcome. I was healed completely in less than a week. No time was lost at work, and no one else was aware of my need. During this period I read a lot, both in the Bible and Science and Health. The ninety-first Psalm became very dear to me; also verse 17 of Psalm 118, "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord."
