The Difference

It may have been a dream—but beautiful at first:I found myself upon a breezy eminenceAt sunrise; and the hill was one great flashing opalIn the bright morning sun, blushing resplendentlyBeneath his passionate June kisses; and the oaksThat crowned the hill stretched out their glist'ning, pleadingarmsFor more—and more—and more.

Sonnet

Because as Christ willed I have tried to wing'Bove earth to seek Life's steady-burning light,Men sneer, and curse me as a leper-blightOn holy rights, call me apostate King,And stone me with their thoughts of hate, and flingMe from their hearts, and in despiteMy proofs of truth still with a pagan mightThey crucify my heaven-endeavoring.

Mary Magdalene

In her last ministry of love, the MagdaleneStands hopeless, weeping at the Saviour's empty grave,Yet by her side the Master stands unseen,Not lost, not gone, not dead, but mighty still to save.

Sonnet

Why ape the ways of blindly-followed precedentThat barriers all roads to eternityWhen veils of fatuous hypocrisyBy one great mind have long in shreds been rent?
When pa gets sick he always knowsHe's gonter die and Tommy goesFor Dr.

The Way

Bare was the cross, and gray,But in the dreary province of the tombThe body of our Saviour lay,Awaiting resurrection from its gloom.

Prayer

Dear God my heart inclines to Thee,Help me to know Thy living Way;For Thou art Light dispelling gloomRevealing an eternal day.

Stanzas on Freedom
