Rock climbing with strength and grace

It was late spring some years ago, and my daughter was going to be a mountain guide in the Sierra Nevada Mountains around Yosemite National Park. She wanted to climb some new routes that she knew she’d have to take clients on. I decided to be her climbing partner for a day, but, unlike my daughter, I was a novice with only a couple of climbs under my belt. We thought we were a good combination and that this plan would give my daughter practice with a “client” who had very little experience.

During the drive to the climb, I silently prayed. I remember feeling such gratitude for all of God’s blessings—I was moved by the beauty I was seeing and truly felt wrapped in God’s tender love for me, my daughter, and everyone I thought about that morning. I prayed with the first verse of Hymn 53 from the Christian Science Hymnal. The hymn has a certain rhythm to it, and it is perfect to sing while actually climbing. The verse says,
