Seeking God First

From the column by "The Window Cleaner" The Evening News Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

I spent an interesting hour last week seeking and finding in my Bible some whys for the wise! It is surprising how so many of them deal with ... life's priorities, how they insist that happiness and success in life depend on which things we put first in our scheme of living. Let me quote some of the sayings I have in mind: "Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?" (Isa. 55:2.) ... "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mark 8:36.) ... "Be not ... anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ... But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matt. 6: 31, 33, Revised Version).

In those last impressive words of the Master of men we surely have his solution for the problem of priorities in life. Too many people are missing the best, too many are missing inner happiness and peace because they are searching for them in the wrong place. They are not to be found under the counter, they have nothing to do with material shortages, they are not concerned with modern luxuries or comforts. The New Testament tells us in straightforward language that ... to make God, as we see His conduct and character revealed to us in Jesus Christ, the Governor and Guide for our everyday life, to have Him as our Father and Friend, is the secret of all happy and wholesome living.
