CHURCH EXAMINATIONS AND HOSPITALITY

As Christian Scientists we rejoice that Mary Baker Eddy has given us a church organization which enables us to be givers as well as getters. It is a privilege to be a member of this great movement and to be allowed to serve in the furthering of its healing purpose.

An examining committee of a Christian Science church, like other committees, realizes that metaphysical work is of first importance to the success of its work. In performing their various duties, its members prayerfully rely upon God for guidance and direction, since this ensures harmonious and successful performance of their work. They do not neglect, however, to take the necessary human footsteps, for our Leader says in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 253, 254), "The divine demand, 'Be ye therefore perfect,' is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable."

One of the indispensable human footsteps of a successful examining committee is the expression of hospitality. It is important because this committee is the first official one to meet an applicant, and its actions may either encourage or discourage the applicant, and so either forward or retard the growth of a Christian Science church or society.
