EXTRACTS FROM REPORTS of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Ireland (Eire)

In the course of the year a new public health bill was introduced into Dail Eireann. This was indeed a very drastic measure, and gave the Minister of Health almost unlimited powers in dealing with diseases declared to be infectious or contagious. Anyone believed to be suffering from a contagious or infectious disease could be forcibly detained for medical examination and for taking of blood samples for the purposes of test. Anyone found so suffering could be forcibly detained in a place of detention or isolation and subjected by force, if necessary, to whatever treatment the public health authorities considered necessary.

The District Manager of Committees on Publication in London gave this Committee every possible help and advice in dealing with this matter. Legal advice from a parliamentary solicitor was sought and obtained, and a memorandum setting forth the views of Christian Scientists on the bill was prepared. This entailed a considerable amount of work.
