TRUE ECONOMY IN SUBSCRIPTIONS

As supplementary in extending the teachings of this vast movement of Christian Science, there are certain messengers, the Quarterly, Sentinel, Journal, Herold, and Monitor, and often it is in this order that they appeal to those who are just awakening to the fact of spiritual healing. Among such one sometimes hears it said: "There is so much to read that I do not have time for all of the Christian Science periodicals;" or, "I do not have the money to subscribe for all of them." My experience may serve to illustrate the self-destruction of this belief of limitation. After taking up the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, the Quarterly became necessary to further investigation. The Sentinel was joyfully welcomed as soon as it was brought to my attention, but the Journal seemed a luxury for which I should have to wait until some future time. Finally, to possess this periodical became a necessity, and I found the "burden light" and realized that I had availed myself of the highest ethical and metaphysical teaching ever published in the form of a monthly journal.

It was shortly after this the Monitor appeared, and although I had been awaiting just such a publication as the ultimate of Christian Science journalism, the realization of this hope found me unprepared. The old thought of lack of funds again seemed to confront me, and in addition the lack of time in which to read the paper. I had, it is true, learned something from my Journal subscription of the abundance which is always ours when rightly sought, but to prove from an economical standpoint that nine dollars a year, the cost of Sentinel, Journal, and Monitor, was not a large sum to expend for Christian Science literature, I made a detailed statement of how much I had been spending for other periodical reading matter. Taking into account monthly magazines, weeklies, the Sunday and daily papers, the sum spent yearly was not only in excess of nine dollars, but much greater than I had thought it to be. The claim of insufficient funds to subscribe for these periodicals was thus shown to be absolutely without foundation, and I sent in my order for the Monitor.

I now had three periodicals which stand unique in the literary field as exponents of the reappearing of the greatest reformation the world has ever known. In them I found not alone inspiration and spiritual instruction, but also the most reliable and advanced information to be obtained in relation to educational matters, the arts, industries, and inventions, and a clean record of current political events, all so clearly and concisely written, so comprehensive and impartial, that the necessary daily data of "men and affairs" was easily and quickly acquired.
