Through the social glass and medical prescriptions I had...

Through the social glass and medical prescriptions I had formed an appetite for liquor, and I frequently took too much of it. After a space I felt bad, and then I took more drink, as it seemed to revive me; but after the effect of it had worked off I felt the need of yet more, and before I knew it I would be again intoxicated. After some years I got so sick that I could not work. Surely "the way of the transgressor is hard." I was paying the penalty for not keeping the commandments of God. My once happy home was to me a veritable hell. I had made it so myself in part. I left it voluntarily, because I could not endure the thought of eating bread I had not earned. My conscience drove me out.

I have said I was sick. I had been so for many years, but could find no help. I did, however, find help when I took up Christian Science, and with it came health and happiness. I am a debter to God first, then to our beloved Leader, who gave us the explanation of the Scriptures that through demonstration is proven true. In Science and Health, we learn how the "old man" is put off. The "new man" is not a drunkard, and he is not sick. Ten years seems a long time without a drink, but I do not crave it any longer. The "old man" smoked and used strong drink, also strong language, but divine Love took away all desire for them. It has been said that the price of the text-book, Science and Health, is high, but if I had had all the money in the world I could not otherwise have found my freedom from the slavery to false appetite. Jesus said we should "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Through Science and Health I found divine Love and my freedom.
