Influences

We are sometimes told that television influences our actions, the stars influence our character, or money and politics influence our morals. But this does not have to be. We are not really prisoners of limited, material thinking—of the human mind, subject to apathy, frustration, and domination. We are all actually under the influence and protection of God, divine Mind.

"In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power," writes Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, "it is wise earnestly to consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,pp. 82-83;

We have a choice in what we accept for ourselves. If we turn constantly to the divine Mind for direction, we are seeking the spiritual understanding that will displace negative influences in human thought and put our actions under the influence of God. Spiritual understanding is expressed in kindness, honest concern, wise acts, and moral living. As our thoughts express good, our actions must, too.
