Destroying the drug lure

Originally published in the September 9, 1970 issue of The Christian Science Monitor

At a time when drug abuse claims to be gripping many people with its physical or mental enslavement, it is reassuring to know that there is a remedy which strikes all shackles from mankind. It is an understanding of God.

The fundamental need for combating the evil of drug abuse is to acquire an understanding of God as omnipotent good, and of man made in His image and likeness: God, the only cause and creator; man, His perfect idea, beloved and unblemished, having dominion over all the earth.

To those appalled by the drug scene, Christian Science presents a basic, crucial statement: that matter is inert, mindless, sensationless, actionless. That which gives a drug any power it may seem to have is massed human belief, erroneous mortal thinking, the carnal mind which St. Paul describes as "enmity against God." Rom. 8:7;   This is what endows any drug with the alleged qualities which men crave or fear. But as God is the only cause, mortal thinking cannot create a mesmeric substance—call it narcotic or hallucinogenic—out of "enmity against God."
