Angels at your service

Chatting with a nice woman next to me on the commuter train platform, I was drawn to her tote bag. It featured a stylized drawing of angels’ wings and the words “Angels at Your Service.” She explained that the medical clinic she worked for provided this service for people who had no transport to get them to and from their appointments.

As I climbed onto the train, I thought about angels. Mary Baker Eddy defined them in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as, “God’s thoughts passing to man ….” I felt really comforted, knowing that these Godlike thoughts are always at our service. I thanked God for the angel messages that come to us all the time, steering us in the right direction, comforting us, and always ready to serve us.

Jesus talked about legions of angels when Pilate was interrogating him, prior to the crucifixion : “Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?” Wow. Thousands upon thousands of inspired thoughts, coming our way!

And these thoughts are with us wherever we go. Not long ago, I was returning home from a business trip in India. As I love to bring new pieces of a rich culture home, my checked luggage was laden more with the treasures and delights of India than with all my dirty laundry. There had been, however, a flight schedule change in Delhi as I checked in for the 15-hour international flight back to the United States. When I released my bags with all my goodies, I confirmed where they were headed with the airline official.

During most of the flight home, I prayed, affirming the safety, harmony, and uninterrupted movement of everyone on the plane. I felt the presence of God on that flight, and I was inspired by His angels. I was particularly comforted with the words from Psalms, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God!”

Upon landing, I cleared customs and immigration effortlessly, met up with my bags, and rechecked them for the last leg of my trip. Suddenly, as I was shuttling between terminals, something didn’t seem right. I was being nudged by my angels, and I didn’t ignore them.

When I examined my baggage claim receipts, I realized that my bags were headed for one airport, and I was on my way to another. This was an inconvenience because there are four major airports within two hours’ drive of my home. After traveling for so many hours, I wanted to arrive home with my bags and not wait to reconnect with them later, possibly much later. I was grateful for this angel message!

At the boarding gate I explained to a rather harried airline official what had happened in Delhi. Although the airline agent had others to take care of, she stopped and discussed my options with me. We both agreed I should change planes to be with my bags. I was quickly given a new boarding pass, and found my new gate. I even had time to call my family and tell them to go to another airport to meet me.

I was so grateful for the sheltering wings of these angels that carried me—and my luggage—all the way home! When I found my way to the baggage claim at the end of a very long journey, not only were my bags there, but my husband and daughter were bounding up to me with welcome-home hugs.

Angels at our service. What a great concept for all of us!
