REALITY

There is no life but God!Across the surging waste of mortal strife,With luring rifts and shoals and glamour rife,The star of ancient days gleams radiant white,And truth, with feet unshod,Soars upward through the trackless night.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS

Dost thou, dear one, still face an angry sea?

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

GOD IS LOVE

Aye, God is Love! Repeat the restful wordsSo early learned, so oft, so lightly said.

OPPOSING VIEWS

Friends and loved ones from you parted,Are you sad and lonely-hearted,Longing for the days now flown?

"THE DIAL IN THE ROSE-GARDEN."

I tell the toll of human weal and woe,While the wing-footed ages come and go:When the night dews are shaken,Soon as the sun doth waken,Hasting his footstep o'er the twinkling seaHe seeks the rose and me.

LOST AND FOUND

I saw that in order to find my life, I had to first lose it—that is, lose all sense of life as material.

THE LIVING CHRIST

Dost seek the Christ, that thou may'st humbly kneel,And to his mercy all thy wounds reveal,—With earnest heart beseech the healing balm,And for thy troubled thought crave heavenly calm?

THE LAW OF SERVICE

The fields are white for harvest,But the laborers are few.
O heart of mine, keep patience! Looking forth, As from the mount of vision, I behold, Pure, just, and free, the church of Christ on earth,— The martyr's dream, the golden age foretold! And, found at last, the mystic Grail I see, Brimmed with his blessing, pass from lip to lip In sacred pledge of human fellowship; And over all the songs of angels hear,— Songs of the love that casteth out all fear,— Songs of the gospel of humanity! Lo, in the midst, with the same look he wore, Healing and blessing on Gennesaret's shore, Folding together with the all-tender might Of his great love, the dark hands and the white, Stands the Consoler, soothing every pain, Making all burdens light and breaking every chain.

A DISCIPLE

DEAR child, what is the prayer that thou hast givenThis morning for thy home which is in heaven?

FATHER, I THANK THEE!

Each day of every year my joyous heartKeeps holy day; nor can I set apartA single morn sufficient to expressMy thankfulness.

PROPHECY

Cometh the days when, not from belfry's throat,Shall men be told of Christ to whom they kneel,"For they shall be all taught of God," one wrote,—In Shiloh's peace the Saviour's presence feel; Not ever shall the children lisp the name,Yet beg for answer whence and how he came.
