A stand against fear
Recently, I was mowing and reached down to dislodge some thick grass stuck in the blade. I felt a sharp pang on the tip of my pointer finger, through the glove I was wearing. At first I thought, “Well, that wasn’t smart.” But during the previous few months I’d been praying to know that nothing could interfere with my listening to God and hearing His direction. So I calmly stopped right where I was and quietly paid attention to what God was telling me is true about His kingdom.
What came to me was the sentence, ”I won’t be arrested by fear.” In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, in her allegory of a court case, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “It was Fear who handcuffed Mortal Man and would now punish him” (p. 436).
I felt the best way for me to resist being “handcuffed” by fear and instead promote healing was not to look at, feel for, or wonder about the physical state of my finger. I began to reason that God governs everything, not matter-based thinking or its source, mortal mind. I dismissed the idea that I was not smart or that an accident involving machinery is to be expected on a farm. I resisted the desire to ruminate over the testimony of the physical senses. Instead, I humbly rejoiced in the truth that Love is all-powerful, ever present, and all-knowing. I was confident that I had nothing to fear, because throughout the Bible we find the repeated message: “Fear not.”
