Quality journalism—anytime, anywhere

Many years before I'd even heard of Christian Science, really, and prior to my study and practice of the religion itself, I had an experience that brought me closer to this Science than I ever imagined it would.

I was taking the train back to Rhode Island after a weekend in New York. I don't even remember where or when I picked up a copy of The Christian Science Monitor. I sat in the smoking section of the trains that they had in those days and read the paper through on the way home. Just a few glances at the pages told me that I was reading a paper that engaged its readers with a quality that few other papers did or could.

I was particularly struck by the article on Christian Science, though I was a bit timid about it, I must admit. I didn't want to be sold a bill of goods about religion—about which I was pretty much of a skeptic in those days. But I found the article intriguing, and, as I remember, I cut it out and kept it for a long time.
