Key elements of prayer—earnestness and expectation
A little over six years ago, I participated in a team triathlon, which included swimming, running, and biking. My part in the event was swimming, and I won first place in my division. My team placed second overall.
In the following months, I continued my mile-long swim in the lake as often as I could, because I found it so enjoyable. But after about a year, I started having trouble with my left shoulder, until with every stroke there was extreme discomfort. Finally, it became too painful for me to continue.
I prayed for healing, asking God for ideas that would help me. While even mildly strenuous activity caused the shoulder to ache, I decided to take brisk walks just to get out. These walks gave me wonderful opportunities for quiet time to listen for God's direction and instruction. At times I felt I was improving. But whenever I tried to swim or hike, I found I was far from being completely healed. After a while, I even stopped going out for the walks.
