My roommate and I were working on a ceiling fixture in an upstairs...
My roommate and I were working on a ceiling fixture in an upstairs room, and this required many trips into the attic. During one of these trips, I slipped as I was going down the ladderlike stairs from the attic. I fell forward, hitting my head very forcefully on the ceiling joist. My head began to bleed profusely, but I never lost consciousness and was able to get to the bottom of the stairs.
At the time, my friend was elsewhere in the house, so I began giving myself Christian Science treatment, specifically affirming that I could never be cut off from Life, God, that nothing could interrupt this Life, and that Life is not dependent on material things (such as blood). At the time, I felt almost as though there were two of me: one, the metaphysician giving treatment; the other, the "creature" that St. Paul talks of: "The creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Rom. 8:21). The "creature," or human part of me, earnestly wanted the bleeding to stop, while the metaphysician was strong, confident, and filled with spiritual authority.
