While I was in college, I decided to take a year off to be a ski bum. I looked forward to living in the mountains and spending as much time as possible skiing. My parents were opposed to my decision to leave school, but I had already made up my mind to go.
I quickly found a job at a local ski shop, which provided me a ski pass. I rented a cheap, centrally located apartment and felt my situation could not have been better.
The second week in December, while skiing the proverbial "last run of the day," I agreed to race my friends down to the lodge. Before I knew what happened, I hit a drop-off and was catapulted into the air. The only thought that came to me in my terror was "God, protect me." I landed with such impact that the moment I touched the ground I was airborne again. Several hundred yards later I finally stopped. My skis, poles, gloves, hat, and glasses were scattered all over the run.
