I am deeply grateful for a quarter century of Christian Science study. A life without its ongoing protection, healing, and satisfying reassurances would be unthinkable.

An early healing of a painful condition of sciatic rheumatism in my right leg has served through the years as a reference point in my further expectancy of good. I am a university professor of theater, and three days before the start of one fall semester I was in such continuous pain I could neither sleep, eat, nor walk. Full of fear, I knew I had only a few hours to gain my dominion before facing a year of demanding teaching and play production. I had never before taken a consecrated stand in Christian Science, but this time I was determined to do so.

First I called a Christian Science practitioner, who stood vigorously by me night and day until the condition yielded and I was healed. I shall always be grateful for his unswerving support, even in the early hours of morning when the discomfort sometimes seemed very great. During this time, I laid aside an enslaving cigarette habit, which in the circumstances seemed a significant step toward the freedom from enslaving matter I was seeking. I also resisted the suggestions of others to take a medical pain-killer, since my difficulty seemed so aggressively unremitting.
