"Hear, ye that are far off, what I [God] have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might" (Isa. 33:13).

I became suddenly very ill and had to be taken to the hospital. There I got worse and lay unconscious for three days. My condition was seemingly hopeless, and it was assumed that I would probably not survive. However, on the fourth day I regained consciousness, and it seemed to me that, like Lazarus, I was resurrected. Because my desire was for treatment in Christian Science only, a faithful practitioner was supporting me with prayer, and I, too, prayed ceaselessly as we are taught in Christian Science. The sayings of our beloved Master, Christ Jesus, and his works were present with me as never before, and I really felt I understood what his transfiguration "on the mount" is meant to be: the revealing to us of man in God's image and likeness (see Matt. 17). As the doctors eventually could find nothing wrong with me, I was released as cured. To me, this healing was a realization of "the grace of God in truth" (Col. 1:6). The Apostle Paul writes in the Epistle to the Romans (11:6): "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace."

During those difficult days Christian Science, which I had known since I was a young man, proved to be of inestimable value to me. How many blessings came to me through it over the years, especially during the Second World War, when enemy troops were occupying my native town and during the following days of evacuation! While on my sickbed, I had time to recall them all, one after another, and to praise and glorify God anew for the manifestation of His constant presence, love, and goodness. Again I realized that nothing is impossible to God and He indeed guides and governs man. It is expressed in these words of Mary Baker Eddy's, "What cannot God do?" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 135.)
